Obote and Akena pictured in their humble home in Lusaka shortly before Obote's death.
Decades prior, Obote forced Mutesa into exile and froze his accounts. Mutesa tried to sell some of his properties by assigning powers of attorney to his sister but Obote imprisoned her and she remained in jail until Mutesa's death in London. Mutesa had considerable personal wealth but because of Obote he could not access any of it. He lived a harsh life in London until his death. Little did Obote know that decades later he would end up in worse circumstances than Mutesa. When he was overthrown in 1985 he arrived penniless in Zambia. Then with Kaunda losing the presidency, the new government shifted Obote to a poor neighbourhood of Lusaka and stopped financial support. Obote planted cassava in his compound for subsistance and drowned himself in booze till his death.
