{UAH} Professor Yusufu Kironde Lule
Professor Yusufu Kironde Lule
"Born in Buganda in 1912, after schooling in Uganda he went on to Fort Hare College, South Africa and Bristol and Edinburgh Universities. He taught at King's College, Budo, and then at Makerere College. In 1955 he entered the colonial government as Minister of Education and Community Development, the first African to reach such a rank in Uganda. In1960 he became Chairman of the Uganda Public Service Commission.
From 1963 to 1970 he was Principal of Makerere University: he left because of strains between himself and Prime Minister Obote. From 1970 to 1972 he was Assistant General Secretary of the Association of African Universities, based in Accra. In 1977 he retired to live in London.
In 1979, when border fighting on the Tanzania-Uganda border led to a full-scale invasion by Tanzanian forces, leaders of the eighteen groups opposed to Amin gathered at Moshi in March 1979, and chose Professor Lule to lead the National Liberation Front. In April he returned to Kampala in triumph, but in June he was forced to resign. A motion of no confidence was passed by the newly established National Consultative Council, and he was replaced by Godfrey Binaisa. Within a year, and after another military intervention, Dr Obote had returned to power.
Dr Lule returned to exile in London, and he became political leader of the National Resistance Movement." – from THE TIMES, 20 January 1985.
