What countries could beat the UK in a straight war?

In the UK?

The United States, temporarily.

On their home field?

US, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Russia, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Turkey, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Philippines, Pakistan, South Africa, Afghanistan, Nepal, Poland, Austria, Egypt, Israel, Malaysia… honestly, most countries that have the ability and population to put up a good fight, even ignoring any alliances.

Britain is quite possibly the easiest place in the world to defend, which I will back up by saying it hasn't been successfully invaded since 1066, longer than anywhere else. But we don't have the projection power we did back when we were an empire (which is probably a good thing). Equally, we are a democracy (which is probably a good thing), meaning any government willing to involve itself in a war will be questioned, and every death will be a mark against the answer.

This is why the United States, with its overwhelming blunt power and ability to place that power anywhere on Earth, would win that straight war, but only temporarily; once that war happens, will for it will instantly vanish, and so the democratic process would (I mean, fuck, I hope) end it.
