White people put on standby lists while people of color prioritized at vaccination site 'to address current inequities'

At least one vaccination site in Washington state is only allowing people of color to sign up for vaccine appointments while white people are put on standby lists.

“Prioritization is designed to address current inequities and barriers to accessing vaccine, and get the people who are at highest risk vaccinated first while federal vaccine supply remains limited,” Washington Department of Health spokeswoman Kristen Maki explained of the practice.

The African American Reach and Teach Health Ministry is a vaccine provider that allows users to sign up for the shot through a digital scheduler. People who use the site for appointments at the Fred Hutch Cancer Research Center on May 1 are prompted to answer whether they are a person of color or white.

Minority users can sign up for an appointment if there’s an available slot. White users are placed on a standby list, and AARTH says it will contact them if a spot becomes available.

“Part of the reason we ask that is because of the funding that we receive,” AARTH consultant Twanda Hill told the Jason Rantz Show. “They want to know. … We have funding because we are able to reach people of color. Federal funding, state funding, county funding. They want to know who are we serving.”

Hill argued that the system doesn’t totally exclude white people, saying a small percentage of white people on the waiting list do get a vaccine appointment. People who lie about their race are also not turned away when they go to get the vaccine.

The state’s Department of Health did not immediately return the Washington Examiner’s request for comment on the legality of the practice.

President Joe Biden announced on Wednesday that his administration reached the goal of administering 200 million vaccine shots within the first 100 days of him being in office but noted that vaccinations still need to be administered.

“The broad swath of American adults still remain largely unvaccinated,” he said, adding that “too many younger Americans may still think they don’t need to get vaccinated.”

He also suggested “small” outdoor gatherings on the Fourth of July might have to be canceled if people don’t continue getting the vaccine.

“To celebrate our independence from this virus on July 4 with family and friends in small groups, we still have more to do in the months of May and June. We all need to mask up until the number of cases goes down, until everyone has a chance to get their shot,” he said.
