*Dr. Afunadula on Hon. Hon. Ssemujju's Candidacy*
Ssemujju Nganda was a humble man whenever he interviewed me for his Newspaper. I was then the Secretary General of the Makerere University Academic Staff Assciation (MUASA). If I remember well, he was still doing his Bachelor's degree in Journalism and Mass Communications at Makerere University.. He must have been fielding for the Daily Monitor or the Monitor before it transmuted to Daily Monitor. He knew how to prove an issue until it was clear enough. Besides he was very intelligent and critical enough to reject some of my submissions with reasonable doubt. When he said he wanted to interview me I would accept but prepare myself very well. I knew it was not a mere interview but a grilling to get out the best.

Since he entered Parliament I have been following his performance. He scaled his brain a notch up.  He is knowledgeable, has wisdom and has insight. He has combined all these to show that he is not in Parliament just for money like most of his colleagues are. He knows exactly why he is in Parliament as an opposition member: to provide alternatives and ensure there is no complacency in government. He displays that he is not in Parliament to please government but to represent as best as he can the public interest, as differently as he can. It seems unlike most of his colleagues in Parliament he understands that life is about nothing but difference. Although he understands that without compromise there can be no progress, he is stubborn enough not to compromise with arrogance and stupidity for the sake of pleasing the rulers.

I was, therefore, not surprised that during the Speaker's race recently he presented himself as a candidate even when he new arrogance and human stupidity would combine to defeat correct thinking and reason for the sake of pleasing power. He was definitely let down by his fellow Opposition members who forgot or ignored why they are in Opposition and preferred to participate in the elections on the side of NRM rather than the side of Opposition. He was the only Opposition standing. It is even possible that the 15 who voted him for Speaker were not Opposition members but NRM members who wanted to undercut the strength of Kadaga.

Ssemujju Nganda will this time round have to put up with a Parliament, Speaker and Opposition far more inflitrated by the Executive and much weaker. We wait to see how he will wade through with protecting and advancing the public interest in such a Parliament with a less critical Speaker and an Opposition more easily manipulated to serve the interests and wishes of power. The main wish of power is that what the President wants is not challenged or opposed.

It is good we still have a Ssemujju Nganda who understands that his role is not to serve as a lobbyist for public services for his constituency, or to serve his own interests,  but to defend, protect and advance the public interest of all Ugandans while he is in Parliament. He has the 15 to mould into an effective minority in Parliament, if they were from the Opposition.

That is the Ssemujju Nganda I present to you this morning as the remaining light for all Ugandans in a sea of darkness.
