In Wyoming, Trump endorsement will reshape race against Liz Cheney

The crowd of Wyoming Republicans vying to oust Rep. Liz Cheney is expected to clear out once former President Donald Trump chooses a favorite, a development that could sink the embattled incumbent.

More than a half-dozen Republicans have announced campaigns against Cheney in the 2022 GOP primary, threatening to divide the vote and boost the congresswoman to a fourth House term. But Republican insiders in Wyoming predict the field will winnow once Trump delivers an endorsement. Indeed, state legislator Chuck Gray, among the first and most active Republicans to mount a campaign against Cheney, would likely fold his bid if Trump endorsed a competing primary candidate.

“It’s something Chuck would strongly consider,” Gray campaign spokesman Rory McShane said Thursday, adding: “When [Trump] endorses a candidate, the others will drop out or their fundraising will dry up immediately.”

Cheney was bounced from House Republican leadership on Wednesday after weeks of tension with GOP members over her constant war of words with Trump.

Cheney takes issue with the former president’s unfounded claims that the 2020 election was stolen; she voted to impeach him for his alleged role in inciting the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6. Even Republicans privately sympathetic to her point of view grew tired of her focus on Trump and having to answer for her comments to his supporters in their districts. Cheney’s comments have worn equally thin with many Republicans in Wyoming.

That’s a problem for Cheney in a state Trump won twice with an average of 69% of the vote, when the former president has declared her enemy No. 1. Trump is vowing to put his political muscle behind one of her primary opponents and do whatever it takes to defeat her.

“It’s bad,” said Bill Cubin, a Republican operative in the state and son of former Rep. Barbara Cubin. “The principle you can’t beat somebody with nobody applies. But if there’s a good candidate who can corner [Cheney] one-on-one with Trump’s endorsement, they can beat her.”

Cheney is the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney. He was a House member for 10 years as the at-large, statewide congressman representing Wyoming and enjoys iconic status in the state. That affection has not translated to the congresswoman, and a laundry list of candidates are angling to take her out. Among them are Gray, paralegal Robyn Belinskey, state legislator Anthony Bouchard, former Pavillion Mayor Marissa Joy Selvig, and attorney Darin Smith.

But the Republican who eventually receives Trump’s endorsement might not yet be a declared candidate. The filing deadline to run for Congress in Wyoming in the midterm elections is not until late May of next year. Some Republicans believe that more formidable contenders, such as Ed Buchanan, the secretary of state, and Jillian Balow, the state superintendent of public instruction, are waiting to see if Cheney runs before they announce.

If the incumbent congresswoman toughs it out, Buchanan, Balow, or some other top-tier Republican might yet move against her in the primary. But there is no rush to do so at this early stage of the election cycle.

Cheney, meanwhile, is vowing to follow through with her reelection plans. Advisers say she views a 2022 campaign against a Trump-endorsed candidate as a proxy battle against the former president in her uphill fight to diminish his standing in the Republican Party. “Bring it on,” she said in an interview with NBC News.
