{UAH} Nobody is too big for NRM, says government spokesperson

The development comes on a backdrop of a fractious build-up to the elections of the speaker and the deputy speaker of parliament, where several NRM candidates are contesting.

Nobody is too powerful for the National Resistance Movement (NRM) to deal with, the Uganda government spokesperson has said.

"Don't think because you are so big, the NRM cannot uproot you. There is someone who once called himself 'Mahogany' and another a 'super minister'. They were uprooted," Ofwono Opondo said.

He said, therefore, any person in Uganda who thinks they have amassed enough clout as to make themselves untouchable are deluding themselves.

He was speaking at a political show on one of the TV stations on Thursday night. According to Opondo, the party has tools and will not hesitate to deploy them on anyone who shows a lack of appetite for toeing the party line.

The development comes on a backdrop of a fractious build-up to the elections of the speaker and the deputy speaker of parliament, where several NRM candidates are contesting.

The NRM, which holds the majority in parliament, is expected to carry out party primaries to choose from among those contesting, which person is to hold the party flag in the final election which will have candidates from the Opposition, on Monday.

However, the process is becoming complicated with each passing day due to the bickering between the former speaker, Rebecca Kadaga, and her former deputy, Jacob Oulanyah, who is gunning for the top job against his former boss.

Matters turned ugly in March which forced the NRM Secretary General, Justine Lumumba, to ask both camps to a ceasefire. Later, President Museveni, who also doubles as party chairperson, ordered both Kadaga and Oulanyah to suspend any canvassing of votes.

Kadaga is the NRM's second national chairperson (female) while Oulanyah is the NRM chairperson for the northern region.

Speaking at the talk show Opondo warned that it will be suicidal for whoever fails to get the party endorsement to contest as an independent candidate on Monday.
