{UAH} Aisha Kabanda
By Sadab Kitatta
-- Deputy NUP secretary general, Asha Aisha Kabanda was an ardent supporter and mobiliser of the NRM. I have known this Butambala Woman MP since 2000 while she studied BCOM at Makerere University. Her class, BCOM (External) had a flexible timetable that enabled her to vigorously campaign for the yellow Movement bus during that year's referendum. I remember seeing her dancing atop a DMC pickup as President M7 came to Makerere to campaign for the "Movement" system. As guild president, Asuman Basalirwa was invited for M7's rally at the Freedom square. He asked me to accompany him as his PPS but I couldn't go beyond the Faculty of Social Sciences building given my weak heart especially where there are guns. The rate at which the military was rounding up students opposed to the establishment was so scary that this man from Buddu could not stand it. I left Basalirwa and I retreated to the University Mosque and watched as the Aisha Kabandas danced on top of pickups in a show of their support for the movement. It is then that she started appearing on radio talk shows to speak and defend Museveni and the NRM. She also had a job at State House as a presidential aide and later on got appointed as Kampala RCC a position she held until 2015 when she resigned to prepare for her 2016 Parliamentary bid for the Butambala Woman MP seat.
Holding the NRM flag didn't save her from tasting the bitter side of the NRM, a political group she had been promoting. She came face to face with the reality, and by 2017, she had made up her mind to decamp. The first time she spoke the same language with Opposition politicians was during the Bugiri Municipality elections in 2018.
There had been rumours that she would be the Jeema Uganda flag bearer for Butambala Woman MP but the more she frequented the People Power secretariat the more she bought into the Kamwokya politics. She picked the NUP flag with which she won the Butambala Woman MP. "Tombuulira, tombuulira NRM," she recently told me, going into the intrigues forced her out of the ruling party. The vile with which she used to speak against the Opposition has since turned against the ruling establishment.
Her party, NUP, deployed to sit on the board of the Parliamentary Pension Scheme. She will sit on the Appointments Committee that will vet the presidential appointees.
