{UAH} NUP will receive about 2.4bn each year
By Ronald Muhinda
All Opposition parties in Parliament, and the NRMilitary junta itself, legally receive money from the Electoral Commission.
Every year, NRM has been receiving about 12bn, FDC 1bn, DP and UPC about 600M each and JEEMA started receiving money in 2018 after Asuman Basalirwa joined.
Now that NUP also joined Parliament, they will receive about 2.4bn each year. Bidandi Ssali's PPP also has one MP who will receive the money.
Under the Political Parties and Organizations Act, Parliament proposed that political parties with representatives in Parliament should be funded partly by tax payer, after the Junta sought to legally criminalise donations to opposition parties.
There is a legal limit to the funds opposition parties can receive as donations, beyond it, it will be addressed as financing terrorism.
And truly, opposition political parties including FDC don't have cash donations today because of that law.
Some of the donations from organizations like IPOD, KAS etc fund specific activities and money is managed by those organizations agents not the party.
So why should the money that FDC gets from Electoral Commission legally, and other parties get it too, be called money from Museveni?
That money is tax payers. For the last 5yrs, FDC could have got like 5bn but NRM got over 60bn from same period. DP and UPC got about 3bn each.
How the money is used, I can't claim to know because I have never seen the party's audited accounts since I don't belong to any leadership position in the party.
If I am not mistaken, the Electoral Commission allocates about 40M annually for each MP to the party he or she represents.
And I am sure this story will be quoting SOURCES because The Observer may not have strict editorial rules like Daily Monitor where you need a record of your anonymous source.
If there are individuals who got the money from Museveni, that money must have been personal to them.
I don't think that money ever reached any organs of the party like Working Committee, NEC or National Council where accountability is tabled.
FDC will be blackmailed because of individual actions of some of its members whom Museveni could have infiltrated and compromised.
And btw, all Opposition parties are infiltrated.
It's not easy being in opposition. You will know it soon.
