At the advent of colonialism, Buganda Kingdom had registered such reasonable civilisation and political organisations that the British had to use Buganda to extend its influence over the rest of what came to be known as Uganda. Buganda's strategic geographical location helped in fostering its social, political, and economic development ahead of other regions. The Kingdom and its people, the Baganda, spearheaded the struggle for Independence and bore much of the brunt. Buganda out-rightly rejected and failed the scheme for an East African political federation and promotion of the Kiswahili language. Four years after Independence, the Kingdom of Buganda was attacked by the central government in 1966 before being abolished in 1967 when Uganda became a republic.
Four years later, when Iddi Amin overthrew the UPC government,. Buganda and the Baganda fully supported the Iddi Amin regime. This did not go well with the exile groups that were bent on dislodging the Iddi Amin regime. It is in the same regard that some individual Baganda, like Ben Kiwanuka fell victim. The so-called liberation group from Tanzania came in with a bias against the Baganda. This bias was manifested in the events that marked the UNLF period (1979 – 1980). Being a top UNLF official, Museveni too had his own misgivings on the Buganda. As Minister of Defence, he was at hand to brutally suppress their civil protests dubbed Twagala Lule in 1979. Shortly after, he actively participated in overthrowing the Godfrey Binaisa government in 1980 before the Military Commission for which he was the Vice Chairman, took over.
During the 1980 general elections, the Baganda dominated DP is alleged to have ben rigged out. Instead it's Museveni who opted to take the party to war, claiming to be for the election that had been rigged. In order to ganner Buganda's support, Museveni opted to establish bases in Buganda territory. To further capture that support, he did not only trick some prominent Baganda leaders like former President Yusuf Lule and his UFF but undermined the other majority Baganda fighting groups like UFM and FEDEMO under Andrew Kayiira. To compound it further, Museveni promised the Baganda, restoration of their kingdom once he would capture power. All calibres of Baganda threw their weight behind him as a way of punishing Obote and his UPC for having abolished their Kingdom in the late 1960s. Economically, Museveni has systematically been destroying Buganda's economic base. The deliberate destruction of its once robust cooperative society movement, coupled with land alienation, has left the Baganda in an awkward situation.
When Museveni took power in 1986, he incorporated a number of Baganda DP leaders in what he termed as broad-based government. Two years later, he embarked on the purge of these Baganda politicians over treasonous activities. Within the army, the purge of former UFM and FEDEMO soldiers was the order of the day. Later, it was the turn for the Baganda in the security forces, in general and to date, one cannot trace the footmarks of the Baganda who predominantly fought Museveni's Bush War. Buganda Kingdom was restored in 1993 but not in its original form. He deliberately refused to return their properties and rent arrears from such property which has accumulated to 200b Shillings. In some instances, highly connected individuals are grabbing such property with impunity. The demand for a federal status has been the most controversial but he has instead offered decentralization. His deliberate interpretation of its demand of federalism was that it harbors a cessation agenda. He ridiculously plucked out the capital city of Kampala from Buganda Kingdom.
Museveni has gone ahead to undermine the kingdom by creating other smaller Kingdoms like is the case with the Ssebaruli in Nakasongola and Ssebanyala in Bugerere. The 2009 Kayunga riots that left several Baganda shot dead by his security forces, closure of its radio station and arrest of ther top Kingdom officials is a classic example. The 2010 riots over the Kasubi Tombs fire that equally left several Baganda dead is another such example. Not to mention the 2007 Mabira Forest riots. The mysterious murders and crimes in general that has for decades targeted the central region have 98% directly affected the Baganda as a community. The repeated so-called security operations against what is dubiously dubbed as terrorism has left the Baganda as victims. The ongoing systematic purge of supporters of former Presidential candidate, Bobi Wine is 98% claiming Baganda as the victims. Museveni has accused Buganda Kingdom of having encouraged the Baganda to support Bobi Wine's candidature. Currently, Buganda is reviving its demand for federalism. Interestingly, it's no longer a Buganda issue but 75% of the country save for South Western Uganda for obvious reasons. Coincidentally, Museveni is also reviving the push for the East African political federation.
It is a fact that as an ardent communist, Museveni has never liked monarchism and at the slightest opportunity available, he will abolish the same. Unlike, in 1966, this time round, Buganda Kingdom would never rise up again. Former Uganda President Idi Amin Dada bestowed on himself several titles like Field Martial the Conqueror (CBE). Similarly, Museveni is in the process of acquiring the rank of Field Martial and he would no doubt wish to also acquire the title of Conqueror of the Buganda Kingdom (CBK). A conqueror is someone who subdues or subjugates a people; and in this case, the Baganda. It's only divine intervention that can halt this scheme.
