Veteran opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye has once again urged his nemesis President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to lift the lockdown at the end of the current 42-day shutdown and plan better.

President Museveni declared a lockdown on June 18, but as its end nears, Besigye has reiterated his calls on Museveni to allow Ugandans to return to work, but put more efforts in vaccinating people and enforcement of Covid19 prevention Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

Besigye said he was concerned that the end of the 42-day was being dominated by speculation on what Museveni would announce next. The former Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) president argued that such speculation was fuelled by lack of "a known plan and targets," something he said had thrown the country into "costly confusion."

The politician from Rwakabengo also vowed to oppose the lockdown as long as it remained selective. "Critically, it's time to end the discriminatory management of our society. It's time for the marginalised to raise their voices until they regain influence on decisions affecting them," he emphasized. "Let's consider imposing a lockdown on all till an inclusive plan for survival of all is made."

As the current lockdown comes to a close, Besigye has urged Museveni to pick a leaf from his Covid19 Management Plan, which includes prioritization of the protection of the vulnerable (people aged 60 years and above, as well as those with chronic ailments) by isolating them "until they are immunized."

The four-time presidential candidate and leader of People's Government detailed his Covid19 Management Plan in an address delivered on July 13. Museveni is expected to address the nation on his Government's next plan in the fight against Covid19 either at the end of this month or in early August
