🔹RUBONGOYA: IT'S UNFAIR AND AN ACT OF FAKE NEWS TO CALL COl BESIGYE A MOLE.

David Lewis Rubongoya, the powerful Secretary General for National Unity Platform, says its can only be "disingenuous" and indeed an act of fake news for anyone to brand veteran opposition leader Col Kizza Besigye a mole or project established by Gen YK Museveni to keep neutralizing the opposition.

It's a claim renowned fake news peddlers and merchants of deliberate misinformation like Turkey-based blogger Fred Lumbuye have been parroting and thereby fermenting confusion and misinformation among their followers. Mr. Lumbuye, clearly a semi-illiterate blogger, has gone as far as disputing Kizza Besigye's qualifications to be a medical doctor, something Rubongoya says is too disingenuous to be believed or taken seriously by any right thinking person. In all these deliberately false claims against Dr. KB, the Lumbuyes of these world have claimed to be going native in order to demonstrate their love and loyalty to Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu, famously known as Principal in the NUP party.

In an exclusive interview conducted at his NUP offices on Tuesday, Mulengera News asked Mr. Rubongoya what the party thinks about the deliberate falsehoods being peddled by such bloggers who consistently hold themselves out to be NUP diehards and his answer was that nobody should be permitted to "diminish" Dr. Besigye's selfless contribution to the struggle to make Uganda a better governed country for the good of its people and posterity. He asserted that branding Besigye a mole and project enacted by Gen Museveni to derail the cause for regime change in this country is the worst form of deception anyone can ever tell in their life time.

"It would be disingenuous for anyone to diminish the role of Dr. Besigye in the struggle for democracy and freedom in this country," Rubongoya asserted adding that the man from Rwakabengo "has made incredible sacrifice" to the extent that his own brother Joseph Musasizi was buried after dying under circumstances related to his years long incarceration in Luzira after he was framed and accused of working with Dr. Besigye and others to use the shadowy pressure group PRA to forcefully topple the government of Gen YK Museveni. "He has also lost relationships; been battered, brutalized, humiliated and flogged publicly because of this struggle. A lot of things have equally happened to him. He has lost personal friends and if he wasn't the solid leader he is, he could have given up and be off by now."

Rubongoya said many of the people peddling falsehoods against the person of Dr. KB are actually regime stooges planted to act as if they are part of the opposition. Rubongoya, who also denied being aware of any fellow NUP leaders using or hiding behind pseudo social media accounts to propagate the deliberate demonization of Dr. Besigye, implied that they as NUP leadership have nothing but respect for the FDC founding President. "That is our position and even our President has been very clear; Dr. Besigye is one leader we respect and it's the reason we keep reaching out to him for ideas and guidance. We perceive him as someone who has played and continues to play a very important role in the liberation of our country." Rubongoya says because they recognize the fact that Dr. KB still has a role to play, they have never given up hoping for a day when "we shall be combining our forces" to amplify the anti-Museveni struggle into the next phase.

Renowned for being very sophisticated and thoughtful, Rubongoya (a Harvard graduate) further asserted that besides the fact that some of these are anarchists planted and facilitated by the regime to keep uttering things aimed at demoralizing fighters like Dr. KB, it's also possible some genuine members or supporters of the struggle from the ranks of the ordinary people are genuinely frustrated that victory has continued eluding the anti-Museveni forces hence their miscalculated decision to begin attacking other leaders operating under the same struggle.

He says because Gen Museveni has governed for 36 years, a lot of people are frustrated and paranoid towards almost everybody including himself. "It's indeed not just Dr. Besigye but many of us just like we have previously been discussing here. Myself I have been called all sorts of names as you know but I'm here and many other leaders have equally been falsely called moles." Rubongoya says besides Dr. KB, Gen Mugisha Muntu is another leader he knows of who has falsely been accused for so long for being a mole which he certainly isn't.

The SG clarifies that even when they have immense respect for Dr. KB, they as young people have a role to play coming to the political space and claiming their space "because when Dr. Besigye, Gen Muntu or even the Otafiires went to the bush, they were young people and they even got government positions after the war when they were much younger than some of us are." However, he was very categorical that coming to the political space to participate in the politics of their country isn't the same as being disrespectful or propagating lies against seniors like Dr. KB, "a solid leader" he says "has made incredible sacrifice for this country."

Rubongoya also said they realize the need to have discipline in a political organization but given the nature of social media where everyone is his or her own boss, it's difficult for them to determine or even control what those professing Kyagulanyi or even NUP post each time they go out to operate their social media accounts.

Those who correctly know Rubongoya, and the polished intellectual he is, won't be surprised about the courtesy with which he discussed Dr. KB's role because in any case, he is one of the key thinkers epitomizing the most liberal-minded and progressive wing of the National Unity Platform, a party of the young people headquartered in the ghettoes of Kamwokya outside the capital Kampala.
