Vineland priest, second driver killed in head-on crash

A Vineland priest has been identified as one of the two drivers killed in a head-on crash Friday night in Gloucester County.
The Rev. Alfred Onyutha, 61, was driving an SUV south on Tuckahoe Road near Sheridan Avenue in Franklin Township shortly before 10 p.m. when his vehicle entered the oncoming lane and collided with a northbound SUV driven by 44-year-old Francis Kitchin Jr.
Onyutha was pronounced dead at the scene while Kitchin, who police identified as living in either Williamstown or Clementon, was airlifted to Cooper University Hospital, Camden, where he later died.
Originally from Uganda, Onyutha had served with the Diocese of Camden since 2005, according to an announcement issued by the diocese. He was most recently assigned as a parochial vicar at Saint Padre Pio Parish in Vineland.
Camden Diocese Bishop Dennis J. Sullivan offered his condolences to the families of both men killed.
"This is a terrible and tragic loss for two families and for parishioners in two dioceses," Sullivan said in a statement. "We take comfort in our faith in the resurrection and ask the Lord to bestow his grace and mercy on the deceased and their loved ones."
One of 10 children, Onyutha was ordained in 1990 in the Diocese of Nebbi in Uganda. After serving there for 15 years, he came to the Diocese of Camden, where he was assigned in Somers Point, Woodbury Heights, Woodbury, Sewell and Vineland.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Anyone who witnessed the accident is asked to contact Franklin Township Police Department at 856-694-1415, ext. 271.
