The Egyptian government announced Thursday an agreement to build five rainwater harvesting dams in various parts of Uganda on Thursday as part of bilateral projects between the two countries.

The dam construction project, with a capacity of no more than 10,000 cubic meters for five dams, called "drug tanks", was launched with an Egyptian grant of $9 million.

The project is part of cooperation between Egypt and Uganda, given the 20-year risk of successive massive flood waves in Kasisi province, one of the heaviest in 2014, according to Egyptian media.

Egyptian Minister of Irrigation Mohamed Abdel Ati stressed Cairo's keenness to continue technical cooperation between the ministries of irrigation of the two countries, announcing the start of preparations for the second phase of this important project, as well as the start of the implementation of the project to build five dams for rainwater harvesting in various areas of Uganda in addition to the well projects already implemented to ensure the provision of clean drinking water to citizens of Uganda.

Uganda's Minister of Water and Environment Sam Chiptoris praised the spirit of cooperation between Egypt and his country, particularly in the areas of irrigation and flood risk prevention.
