Ryerson University will officially be renamed
Ryerson will officially be renamed, the university confirmed in a statement on Wednesday.
The university's board of governors approved 22 recommendations laid out by the Standing Strong Task Force. The university said recommendations were informed by the participation of more than 11,000 Ryerson community members.
"The report provides clear recommendations on how the university can move forward and write the next chapter in our history," Mohamed Lachemi, president and vice-chancellor of the university, said in a statement.
One of the recommendations was to rename the school.
The debate over the renaming of the university intensified after the statue of Egerton Ryerson, one of the architects of Canada's residential school system, was toppled and beheaded by protestors at a rally to honour the hundreds of children whose remains were discovered at a former residential school site in Kamloops, B.C.
In the past year, as an internal rift over changing the school's name spilled out into the public, the university lost opportunities with would-be donors while managing complaints from current donors, some of whom threatened to withhold their gifts to the university depending on how it responded to public pressure.
Some of the other recommendations include sharing materials to recognize the legacy of Egerton Ryerson, and providing more opportunities to learn about Indigenous history and Indigenous and colonial relations.
"The report provides a full picture of the past and present commemoration of Egerton Ryerson, yet the recommendations are not based on either vilification or vindication of the individual," Lachemi adds in the statement.
