{UAH} What makes Calgary one of the most livable cities in the world?
For the 10th year in a row, Calgary has ranked in the top five world cities in the Economist Intelligence Unit's Global Livability Index.[1] According to the Economist, Calgary is the fifth most livable city in the world and the single most livable city in Northern America based on the following factors.
- stability,
- healthcare,
- culture,
- environment,
- education,
- infrastructure,
Vancouver scored high in the healthcare, culture & environment, and education categories, but its rating dropped due to its lack of infrastructure and stability. So, Calgary is now #1 in Canada, #1 in North America, and #5 in the world.
Vancouver, and Toronto are also among world's 10 most livable cities, but Calgary is less expensive than Vancouver and Toronto, which now have house prices in the $1 million plus range. You can buy an average house in Calgary for less than $500,000, mostly because of the vast amounts of developable land within the city limits, and between the city and the mountains.
The oil industry in Alberta has been in the doldrums, mostly due to the anti-oil policies of the Canadian Liberal government which seems to think that oil shouldn't be the largest industry in Canada and the Canadian economy should be based on pixie dust and moonbeams. Oh, I meant renewable energy and not fossil fuels.
However, based on recent observations, the high-tech industries seem to be taking off in Calgary, and despite the downturn in oil company downtown offices, the suburbs of Calgary are booming despite the expectations of Easterners and Left Coasters. Investors have invented the term "Unicorn" for a high tech startup company that is now worth more than $1 billion, and it seems Calgary now has several of them.[2]
Where I am living here in the Canadian Rockies this has the downside that we are going to start charging for parking in our local dog park because too many Calgarians are coming out to the mountains to walk their dogs. Why would they come out to the Rocky Mountains to walk their dogs? Apparently because they can. The skiing and hiking are good, too.
