{UAH} I RAISE A HAT TO GENERAL TITO OKELLO THIS MORNING

There are actions that get done by Ugandans and we just ignore them, I want to write about a good Acholi after a long time. And that good Acholi is General Tito Okello. Few days ago Ahmed Kateregga raised this man among the peace loving Ugandans, and I need to put on record the part to me that justified that title to Tito. I will also go on record that this writing does not ignore the atrocities that Tito Okello did in that country all way through the 1979 war and after Amin’s government. Tito Okello saved a whole lot of lives in our country, you see at the time of the Luwero war, it reached a point of taking Kampala and Entebbe. We had two forces that would go all the way to get the victory in that very long war, NRA and UNLF. Both groups never cared how many lives of Ugandans lost they just wanted to win.

 

To me Tito Okello did two things that I remember him for, he pulled Acholi from UNLA and that single act subdued the Obote government to Obote departing from Uganda. Can you simply vision a day when Obote is in Kampala, Peter Simon Okurut is in Kampala, and pOcure is in Kampala and then NRA surrounds the city? What instructions would the three gentlemen give to the Acholi soldiers? Do you think they would have saved a single life in the city? And I opine that they would have decimated the entire city, all buildings would have been blown up, and every moving person in Kampala would have been killed. The exit of Obote from  Kampala turned the Peter Simon Okurut and the pOcure’s impotent, for they lost the Acholi factor.

 

When the peace jokes started Acholi soldiers had returned to Kampala for at this point Tito was in “power”, but Tito was smart as well, he realized what many Acholi failed to realize, that if NRA had cruised all way from Luwero to Kampala suburbs, the Museveni’s were going to take the government it was only when. As Semogerere kept on commuting between Kampala and Nairobi daily, Tito Okello handed NRM every single thing they demanded for. Tito refused to wage a war against NRA. I followed those talks, and there were days Ssemogerere would come back with very strange demands, for example NRM wants all Acholi in Kampala to be disarmed, and he instructed them disarmed. I think there was even a police station NRM wanted, either Wandegeya police station or Kawempe police station, one of those two, and Okello gave it to  them. NRA started to drive their vehicles when they are even armed, and Acholi did not touch them for Tito Okello instructed them not to attack. Kampala became a city with two forces running side by side, until when the government fell.

 

I know many out there call Tito Okello a weak man, I am submitting to you that there is a reason why the war was never fought in Kampala, and it was due to Tito Okello. And as to those of us that had been in Luwero the entire war, those of us that had lost relatives and buried them into short graves, those of us that had seen the violence of both sides face to face, we are glad it never took place in Kampala. But this is going to be very hard for blood thirsties to understand, yet to us that were just fade up with war it was a sign of relief. Yoweri Museveni came to power without a single building blown up in Kampala. It was not a miracle from God it was a hand of Tito Okello.

 

And with that I will do one thing I have not done before, I raise a hat for an Acholi General Tito Okello.
