‘Surprise conclusion’: Trump overtakes Biden in popular support among U.S. voters, poll finds

Former U.S. president Donald Trump has overtaken his successor, Joe Biden, in popular support, a new poll reveals.

Fifty-one percent of 1,578 registered U.S. voters considered Trump to be the better leader, while 49 per cent prefer Biden, according to the Harvard CAPS-Harris Poll online survey taken between Sept. 15 and 16.

The poll could indicate that multiple crises, including a COVID resurgence and the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan, have marked a shift in voter’s perception of Biden.

“The mounting issues on all fronts have led to the surprise conclusion that Trump is now seen as good a president as Biden, suggesting the honeymoon is being replaced now with buyer’s remorse,” said Mark Penn, co-director of the Harvard CAPS-Harris Poll survey.

“Since Trump lost the popular vote by 5 points, Trump getting 51 percent as a better president is actually an improvement from Election Day.”

Biden won the presidency with 51 per cent of the popular vote, however his support has tumbled in recent months. A July Harvard CAPS/Harris Poll survey saw Biden’s approval rating slide from 62 per cent to 52 per cent in June. The latest poll also shows the current president’s approval rating fell below 50 per cent to 46, while 48 percent of voters had a positive perception of Trump.

The current president’s favourability was also reduced, with 49 per cent saying they held an unfavourable view of him, compared to the 47 percent that reported having an unfavourable impression of his predecessor. Trump had actually had a lower approval rating than Biden at this point in his presidency.

The poll also found Biden’s cabinet has less support than the one they evicted. Fifty-five per cent of those surveyed said Mike Pence is a better vice president than Kamala Harris, while 63 per cent thought Mike Pompeo was a better secretary of State than his successor Anthony Blinken.

Penn said Blinken’s image suffered in the wake of the Afghanistan withdrawal.

“People see Pence as a better VP by 10 points and overwhelmingly see Pompeo as far better than Blinken, who has been out front on Afghanistan,” he said.

While Trump hasn’t announced whether he’ll run for president in 2024, polls show him as the preferred candidate among Republicans.

A Rasmussen telephone survey this week found Trump would beat either Biden or Harris in a hypothetical race , with one in five Democrats saying they would vote for Trump over either in 2024. A separate Gallup Poll this week indicated only 30 per cent of Americans approve of the way the country is governed, with 69 per cent disapproving .
