Shot dead near a busy east-side intersection Monday evening, a recent homicide victim had gang ties, a history of drug and gun offences and was well known to police and security staff in the Regent Park housing project.

But by mid-afternoon Tuesday, no arrests had been made and detectives were still asking witnesses to step forward.

Theodoros Tiku, a resident of Regent Park after his family immigrated to Canada from Somalia, collapsed on the curb near Pape and Danforth avenues after being shot at least once in what appeared to be a targeted attack.

Several shots were heard by residents but it was unclear how many bullets struck the victim. A post-mortem has been scheduled for Tuesday.

A doctor who lives nearby tried unsuccessfully to resuscitate Mr. Tiku, 27, as he lay bleeding on the sidewalk on Gough Avenue, a block west of Pape, police said.

The crime scene is near Greektown, an upscale, mostly middle-class neighbourhood on Danforth Avenue lined with restaurants, The first investigators to arrive heard conflicting accounts of how the shooter fled.

Some witnesses said he drove away with a group of friends, while another bystander said he was alone and made away on foot.

Mr. Tiku's death was the city's 46th homicide of the year.

Although familiar to police and Regent Park security personnel, his criminal record was relatively minor, and court records show he had not spent any lengthy periods of time behind bars.
