{UAH} A Ugandan who once lived in the UK before returning to Uganda
By Appollo Lumu
-- Growing up on the streets of London as a teenager was a profound experience , but it is the discipline I had acquired through my education in Uganda that helped me through this phase.
Wearing that unform is one of the most powerful and humbling experience ever .
It soon dawns on you , how the public believes and trusts your presence , and as a black man in police uniform the expectations are way higher , from both white and black folks !
I wouldn't have asked for a better job , or even a better experience , I've not looked at human beings in the same naive light that I used to have , ever again .
Ofcourse policing black communities is never without its unique challenges, which the Met under Scotland Yard has taken strides to rectify over the years .
There is still alot that could be done, but truth be told, the ugly Brixton scenes of yester years are a far cry, alot has been achieved by the Police !
And am saying this as someone who had the experience as a young man on the rough and tumble streets of Brixton, Pecham, crystal Palace, Streatham, Lewisham , Depford !
All these areas have changed , new investments , better housing and public education, improved public transport and better job opportunities .
Is it an excellent experience for young black people, no, but its way better than the 70s and 80s !?
