{UAH} 1926 Uganda

By Baba Umasakulu, UK

The setting of the year 1926 benchmark has nothing to do with Uganda's boundaries nor Obote's birth date! But it has everything to do with the socio-economics immediately after independence.

Some of you do know that, at independence and even now, the Indians have been the engines driving Uganda's economy. Some of you may know that, after construction of Uganda Railway, a big number of Indians stayed behind to do business with the natives. These Indians, just before our independence, acquired British citizenship. This made them expatriate businessmen with a privilege of extracting their money from Uganda and take it to Britain or other foreign countries. It was part of Independence undertakings! Remember they were doing business in Uganda. Obote tried to ask the Indians to take up Ugandan citizenship to minimise export of money but most of them refused except a few like  the Madhvani. Obote couldn't just watch the country losing hard currency. He set a benchmark that anyone living in Uganda by  1926 is a Ugandan citizenship. This was done to stop Indians from taking money out of Uganda by using the law that governs expatriates. I hope this briefly explains 1926.
However Amin did it expressly, without finesse of a politician, by declaring Uganda's Economic War by decree.
