{UAH} DOES CITIZENSHIP EXPIRE?

DOES CITIZENSHIP EXPIRE?

Mulindwa has been living in the United States of America for the last 10 years. In fact, he is thinking of making the United States of America his permanent home. He wants to stay there because he believes it is the land of dreams, milk and honey. He believes that one day he is going to be a world-renowned music artist.

His friend Barigye (in Uganda) has discouraged him from doing so. He says that he will lose his citizenship. That in fact he should just come back to Uganda and renew his passport or else he would lose his Ugandan citizenship.

ARE ALL THESE TRUE?

No, Mulindwa's citizenship will not expire. You cannot simply lose your citizenship when you are abroad or when your passport expires. Your passport is just a document to identify you as a citizen when travelling to foreign countries.

The only way to lose your citizenship is to formally renounce your citizenship. This option is however not given to every country's citizen and there are strict requirements to be met.
