{UAH} So,Amin expelled British citizens in 1972, not Ugandans

By Baba Umasakulu, UK,

During Lancaster Independence Talks, the British government insisted that the Indians are their citizens. Secondly,  the same British government insisted that all expatriates must enjoy their rights to transfer their earnings out of Uganda. This included Indian shopkeepers and others.

At independence, Uganda Government inherited such an economic disaster because her foreign reserves were being depleted by the Indians as much as the money was made in Uganda without foreign investments.

Uganda Government offered Indians to become her citizens. Very few accepted this offer. The young Uganda Parliament led by Milton Obote then passed a law that anyone who lived in Uganda by 1926 is automatically a citizen. This was aimed at curtailment of outflow of foreign currency by the Indians.
