WHO IS A SENIOR WIFE:

Polygamy is practiced in many parts of Uganda and is defined as a situation where a man is lawfully married to more than one wife.

NB: If a man has one lawfully married wife, and many "side dishes", this is not classified as Polygamy, rather, in everyday terms, its classified as "side- dishing".

Back to the topic. Well, in case of Polygamy, a Senior Wife is the wife who was married first in time.

This definition usually applies during issues of succession and inheritance. For example, under certain situations where no legal heir exists, then the Senior wife can be considered the legal heir.

EXAMPLE:

If Mr. Kiberu got married to Hajjati Mariam in 1980, and then married Ms. Panadol wa Basajja in 2000, then Hajjati Mariam is considered the Senior wife.
