{UAH} Amin's men!

By Diana Sempebwa Katabarwa

Amin's men. Powerful and feared. Instilled fear in everyone old enough to understand the prevailing circumstances at that time. The picture was taken in 1979. This is the last picture of them attending the 25th January military takeover celebrations in Kasese. Three months later the one on the far left was hiding in our guest room even fearing to reach the sitting room. Circumstances had changed in April and Tanzanians had reached Kasese. He did not make it to Zaire in time. Everywhere people were searching for Amin's men to stone them to death. A few unlucky ones had been caught and killed by mobs.

My late father took the risk to hide this military officer because two years earlier he saved him from arrest by a notorious State Research operative in Fort Portal called Sebi. In April 1979 Sebi met his death at the hands of a mob when he was recognised near the border as he was trying to flee to Zaire.

Of course to stop us from telling neighbours about our house guest, my brother and I were grounded indoors for a whole week until my father went to talk to the Tanzanians in Kasese barracks and tell them there was a Uganda Army officer who wanted to surrender himself. He was then picked from.home and put under arrest. He spent two years in Luzira and was released when the Tanzanians were leaving Uganda. He ended up in the refugee camps in Western Kenya.

Mugisha Muntu once told security personel to behave in a manner that they will not find it difficult to live in society once they are no longer in power. But the problem is those in power are intoxicated with it and think power never ends.
