{UAH} Now this is the real Yankee politics

In an extremely provocative tweet on Thursday evening, South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham (R) seemingly called for the assassination of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

'Is there a Brutus in Russia?  Is there a more successful Colonel Stauffenberg in the Russian military?' Graham tweeted. 'The only way this ends is for somebody in Russia to take this guy out. You would be doing your country - and the world - a great service.'

While Putin is undoubtedly an autocratic dictator and his aggression in Ukraine is widely agreed to be an international travesty, the directness of Graham's comments struck many as a dangerous escalation in rhetoric from a sitting U.S. official, at a time when tensions about the conflict in Ukraine are already at a fever pitch.

'Honestly gobsmacked at how reckless that Lindsey Graham tweet is,' MSNBC TV host Chris Hayes tweeted.

'During a tense great power stand off, you really don't want to be announcing a plan to assassinate the other country's head of state,' tweeted journalist Josh Marshall, the founder of Talking Points Memo.

Even Laura Ingraham, a right-wing Fox News host, seemed taken aback by Graham's tweet on her show Thursday night. 'I don't know why a sitting U.S. senator would be tweeting that out. It seems really dangerous and stupid to say that,' Ingraham said. 'And we like Lindsey Graham. But that's just a stupid comment.'
