{UAH} TEN GREAT CANONIZATIONS IN ROME THIS SUNDAY ( 15/05/2022 )
Dr G.H. Kkolokolo
-- Pope Francis is going to proceed with ten important canonizations during which ten historic individuals, some of them martyrs, will be formally and officially proclaimed saints of the Roman Catholic Church. The ceremony will take place at 10 a.m.(Roman Time) tomorrow, Sunday 15th May 2022 in St Peter's Square at the Vatican. All is set for the very great occasion which will see 3 French nationals become saints. Among them is indeed especially Blessed Charles de Foucauld, a former French army officer who became a priest and did a brilliant pastoral career among the Tuaregs and natives of Algerian Sahara where he died as a martyr.
Thousands of French pilgrims and several dozen Algerians are among the very many pilgrims who have already arrived in Rome for the big occasion. It's being noticed that the entire St Peter's Square and all adjoining streets will be filled to capacity by the hundreds of thousands of faithful expected to turn up. To access the Square one will need a special ticket provided for the event. And it already appears that all tens of thousands of tickets have been distributed.Media platforms and the entire world press with dozens of TVs will relay the ceremonies directly to the whole world.
Much of the attention is centred on Blessed Charles de Foucauld whose renown is universally recognized due to very many factors.
Blessed Charles de Foucauld was born to a rich and noble family on 15/09/1858 in Strasbourg in Eastern France. He was murdered by his pagan guard on 01/ 12/ 1916 at Tamanrasset in Algeria where he led a life of an impoverished hermit. Prior to becoming priest he had been a serving officer of the French army who had passed through the very prestigious St-Cyr Military Academy. He was posted in a number of places including Morocco, Egypt, etc.. When he decided to quit the army he asked for priesthood. And after ordination he volunteered to serve in the Sahara where he made excellent acquaintances with the vast Moslem population and the many native tribes including the Tuaregs. He became an active fighter against slavery, colonialism, and religious intolerance. At the same time he distinguished himself as an explorer, a geographer, and a linguist. He won great recognition as an expert on the Sahara in all its multifaceted dimensions.
His vast contacts with the diversity enabled him to develop a typically Christian outlook on Paradise. And Vatican Council II accepted many of his theses regarding salvation as a gift that God can extend to all in appreciation of their good humble roles in society.
By the time he died he had already founded two important religious congregations, namely the Little Sisters of the Sacred Heart ( now numbering over 2000 members) and the Little Brothers of the Sacred Heart ( 1000 members to date). Both congregations are spread worldwide.
In Uganda we used to have these Little Sisters at Kitovu (Masaka) and at Nalukolongo near Lubaga.
His canonization will bring to the attention of the whole world that kind of saint who ventures with exceptional courage to bring the message of love even to the remotest and the unknown.
