{UAH} June Is Pride Month

June Is Pride Month

June is Pride Month, when the world's LGBTQ communities come together and celebrate the freedom to be themselves. Pride gatherings are rooted in the arduous history of minority groups who have struggled for decades to overcome prejudice and be accepted for who they are. The original organizers chose this month to pay homage to the Stonewall uprising in June 1969 in New York City, which helped spark the modern gay rights movement. Will you be celebrating Pride this month?

In 1978, artist and designer Gilbert Baker was commissioned by San Francisco city supervisor Harvey Milk – one of the first openly gay elected officials in the US – to make a flag for the city's upcoming Pride celebrations. Baker, a prominent gay rights activist, gave a nod to the stripes of the American flag but drew inspiration from the rainbow to reflect the many groups within the gay community. A subset of flags represent other sexualities on the spectrum, such as bisexual, pansexual and asexual. Were you aware of the origin of the Pride flag?

On Sunday, June 12, the 75th Tony Awards, the awards for Broadway, will both celebrate live theatre and the resilience and strength of the theatre community, which has endured (along with all of us) a very long two years. And the Broadway community, is speaking up in defiance of the Florida "Don't Say Gay" bill that was signed a few months ago, with their "How Do You 'Say Gay' Every Day" campaign. Playbill magazine, besides going rainbow, interviewed some of the many LGBTQ actors about how they "Say Gay" every day. Some of the quotes ranged from "by wearing what I want regardless of how my gender is perceived by others, even toxic masculine folks on the street", "holding my partner's hand and sharing my love and respect for her wherever we go" and "live my authentic life out and proud, and my hope is that it gives others the strength to say, "I'm gay." So, in my opinion, if you have a problem with people being able to live their authentic lives and sharing their love with who they chose to love, and it most definitely does not infringe on your right to love who you want, then you should not have any problems with people being gay. Do you agree?
