{UAH} This is deep!
By Charles Rwomushana
-- On finishing Makerere University, and after serving as Guild President and member of most University committees where we got sitting allowances, I visited Mukulu Verina Rujoki at Acacia, Kololo.
Verina Rujoki was mobilised by my Headmaster Mbarara High school to pay my school fees for I was going to drop out of school.
She indeed paid my school fees
There was a house that had been allocated to the family of the Late Sam Magara where we would do stay in holidays with Patricia Magara mother, Uncle Emmanuel Kafuniza, as we used to call him.
So I had gone to inform Verina I was done with studies and also to request for space to keep some of my stuff I was using at the University.
Verina Rujoki walked me into Kamuwokya Ghetto market and we entered an eating joint.
Inside it was clean but surrounded by filthy drainage channels.
She bought me katogo of cassava with groundnuts.
It was served on a plastic plate
She sat and watched as I ate.
When I was done,
Verina called my names
"Rwomushana, this is the life you are going to confront..."
We walked back to Kololo and the next day I set off for campaigns for Constituent Assembly with 2000 shillings for transport and 700 shillings to start the campaign that I won.
I have never asked Verina Rujoki whether she inducted and oriented her son John Musinguzi Rujoki the current Commissioner General Uganda Revenue Authority through the same drill of eating from the Sheraton of Ghetto where you chose the piece of meat you want served and can ask for more soup to finish a potato.
I have never asked her how she got to know such eating joints and her thought processes leading to lead a former Guild President through such an orientation.
She had contacts (the likes of Salim Saleh, Hon Janet Kataha, Mr Museveni etc )she would just talk to and I would get a job instant.
In any case I didn't need introduction.
She instead took me for gnuts cassava katogo in a Ghetto.
It's an induction and orientation I will always cherish.
