Joys and Hazards of High Heels (Part 2 of 2)

Wearing sky-high heels can be hazardous to your health.

Wearing high heels and stilettos can damage your body. It's especially problematic the way high heels shift the wearer's body weight forward onto the ball of the foot and toes. Which of the following injury possibilities were you aware of?

Hammer toes (as pictured above)

Bunions

Corns and/or calluses

Hyperextension in toes

Constricted blood flow in the feet can cause vessels to break.

Ankle sprains

Sore calf muscles

Can contribute to protruding veins on legs

The awkward curvature of legs puts too much pressure on knees, which can lead to osteoarthritis.

Lower back pain

Hip problems

Can create shortened Achilles tendons

Can throw off posture and gait to the point of causing arthritis in the spine.

Does becoming aware of the hazards of wearing stilettos affect your attitude about wearing them?

I'm a man and don't wear stilettos.

I used to eat in fine dining restaurant in which the owner required his female servers to wear high heels. While I understood that the women chose to work there, I had much sympathy for their having to tote and balance heavy trays of food. What's your response? Please choose all that apply.

That seems like an unreasonable requirement.

It's worth the servers' discomfort to be able to see them in heels.

I go to a specialist who wears stilettos to work. Every time I hear her heels click-clacking down the hall as she approaches the exam room, I shake my head.
