{UAH} The Mao of 1990 Vs Mao of today

By Sekalo Muhammad

A 1990 NOBERT MAO REINCARNATE

Makerere University students had had an impasse with government over the government's refusal to continue paying for students non-academic things like BOOM(money for transport, text books and upkeep etc).

The Guild elections in 1990 had returned the so eloquent Norbert Mao as President to replace Owor.He called students to converge at Freedom square  and listen to their leaders on 10th December, 1990.

Police dispersed the crowd and in the scuffle, two students-Thomas Okema and Tom Onyango were shot and died.

Daddy(standing in photo at Makerere University Agricultural Research Farm-MUARIK-Kabanyoro in 1990) told me to go and check on my two brothers(names withheld) studying at MAKUNIKA and find out if they were safe.I was agile.Young and quick. But I did not go beyond Kalerwe-the situation was tense.I returned to Kasangati and left everything to Allah.

A few days later, the University was closed and my brothers returned home. And when it was later reopened,Mao kept quiet since. As if he hadn't reportedly incited students leading to the loss of lives!

32 years on,a former opposition leader always all along chanting anti-government slogans quickly crossed to serve in the government he had so much "hated"-as if in his opposition endeavors,no lives were either lost or disturbed. As usual,he will keep quiet to enjoy his pay as Justice and constitutional affairs Minister. Finally the President had seen him after all!😀

Typical of the Mao I saw as a boy.Not surprised.

Juma Mubarak.
