So, Baboons
-- Being a renown native chef in my city i recently participated in what us known in the Caribbean as "runaroun" with a bunch of my west Indies and a few African buddies
I am sure none of you ever heard about runaroun. It wasn't my first time.
A runaroun simply comes from the word "run around" but authenticity of pronouncing runaroun must have Caribbean flavour, eg. Jamaican.
So what is runaroun.
Its a men's thingi that originated from good'ol Jamaica.
A runaroun is an impromptu meal that can turn into excess food/drinks and into a neighborhood party.
A runaroun is never a planned event. Its always a request by one individual and this is how it happens.
A group of 8 men take turns playing Domino from say 11am pass 4pm. Inevitably they start falling hungry
One who can't take the hunger anymore but doesn't want to leave the game will suggest a runaroun.
It is domestic intrusion if I may term it, in that soon the men bang heads rapidly volunteering bring something.
They break away and within minutes one is carrying two healthy yams, another, pieces of chicken, another goatmeat, another tuna fish, another redsnapper, another rice, another salt and spices, another sweet potato and yet another a jerrycan of water, another with a huge cooking pot another with charcoal, fire, etc. It doesn't matter what goes into the pot.
Withing minutes there is a fire and huge pot of boiling water. Even as they start the cooking process othersbstil run to their houses if they remembered a certain input
The idea of a runaroun is improvising a meal that will feed all by running around to collect anything and adding to the lone pot.
Believe me, the outcome of runarouns are fro. What can't be documented bcos anything is added anytime until its declared cooked and self service out of the single pot.
The men continue with the game while attending to the pot as well. Runarouns are occasissuin where the most gluttonous will forever be defeated by food.
In this part of the world its difficult to suggest one impromptu bcos we live in cities and mixed neighborhoods often far from people we know but its possible to recreate a runaroun
One such occurred at a Caribbean church I attended and was the first time I heard the word which everyone seemed to know except me but didn't ask what it was when it was being proposed.
When wifey clarified and explained what it was I remember taking red-snapper to see if it would be added. Without question it went into the pot together with other meats, fishes veggies, politicians, etc
But the latest a few weeks ago is the subject of this story
Baboons place got a solarium and a solarium has been the worst part of a residence which has it in this heat.
Nevertheless, I didn't lose all to the heat. I used the heat to process an amazing African food item.
The Amukeke.
Wanna eat some, cooked in milk, massed butter, cilantro etc? Come to my crib.
A few days ago a friend called for a runaroun to reunite menfriends following Covid19
Guess one of the things I took. Amukeke which none in the group knew and for a long time after randomly finding it in their plates I had to explain what and how Amukeke is made. It changed the runaroun flavor with its distinct flavour and salient aroma that can only be experienced when its in the mouth.
Yeap, I made my own shelved Amukeke which is available in our dry foods shelves except not for sale.
