Rwandan woman facing two years in jail for indecent dressing
CourtesyA Rwandan woman is facing up to two years in jail for indecent dressing. The 24-year-old lady had attended a concert in a see-through dress leaving little to imagination and after her photo made rounds on social media, she was arrested and taken to court.
According to Radiotv10Rwanda, the woman was denied bail with the prosecution requesting that she be detained for 30 days as the investigation continues.
The Law Determining Offenses and Penalties in Rwanda, Article 143, stipulates that "Any person who performs an indecent act in public, commits an offense. Upon conviction, he/she is liable to imprisonment for a term of not less than six months and not more than two years".
The case caused an uproar online with many calling out authorities for violating women's rights in this day and age.
This comes a few days after the Rwanda National Police Spokesperson stated on national TV that it is committed to taming such indecent behaviours.
Just last month, the Ministry of Education and Sports in Uganda banned artistes from performing in schools for promoting immorality. Acting Education PS Jane Egau referred to an incident on July 11, 2022, where a viral video showed students dancing in an inappropriate manner.
According to Egau, this was because schools have been inviting entertainers in the name of extracurricular activities. School heads were also warned against allowing artistes to perform in schools, failure to which disciplinary measures will be taken against them.
"Extracurricular activities in school normally mean sports and games, debate clubs etc. If schools need to entertain themselves, then they can engage in acting plays or arrange concerts.
