BUSINESS VS. FAMILY

I started my first business at the age of 28 and one thing that was so clear in my head was that I wasn't starting a family until I could financially look after one!
My own background had taught me a clear lesson. I knew I needed to do things differently!
In my 3rd year of doing business, I had set a foundation for Great LakesUganda, wasn't so great but could look after and a family plus grow if I managed it well.
Towards my 31, I got married but I had explained to my wife to be before marriage where I was and where I wanted to go!
I had promised my wife I would either build or a buy a home us at the age of 35yrs! That would be 4 years into marriage!
So we rented in nsambya estates and if we got bored, we would move to another rental within the estates besides rent was cheap( between 120 and 200 dollars)
Ofcourse Great Lakes Safari continued making a good name and being known for offering good service to clients and growth was inevitable!
When I got 35yrs, I had saved up some money for a house which couldn't offer us our dream house in our proffered location.
To me when you think about a home, you think of where children go to school, where your work place is!
You can't buy a home in Mukono for a family, your work place is in Entebbe and the school is in kasanga.
It's becomes more expensive than renting and therefore chose renting.
Anyways, at 35 years of age Uganda wildlife authority advertised now Primate lodge location!
I convinced my wife, it was better I invested in accommodation as a business than buying a home at the time.
It's good to engage family at all times while doing business, even kids
I promised family I would buy a home at the age of 38 years God willing. At 35 years primate lodge in the picture was built, crappy as it may look but a new chapter had started.
Like I said family( wife & kids) is a big stakeholder must be engaged to reduce pressure on you.
As a businessman, you will have to prove to family that you actually know what you are talking about for them to trust the process including your promises!
Anyways, end of 2007, a friend tells me land was available next Queen Elizabeth national park, all I needed was 28m.
28m would give me 7 acres plus some old buildings expanded over time which were a site for SBi construction company after they had finished bwera Road.
Many people thought I was mad buying that location, dry land, no water, no electricity, thieves used to camp there.
Everything sounded wrong, That place that sounded wrong is where Elephant plains lodge and simba safari camp are now!
In 2019, I saw family was getting tired of promises of a good home( house) and yet they knew I could afford better space for them. I had continued reinvesting in business, either improving what we had or doing new stuff etc. Also invested in idle land as an addition.
April 2019, I asked together with an architect design a house they want and I started construction in July and by April 2020, they were happy for new family home.
What am thinking of doing in business even the 10 old will know, I will sit down with each family member to discuss. So at the age of 38years, I convinced family to continue renting in nsambya estates. Rent was cheaper( we were paying only 200 dollars a month) plus convenient for school for kids.
Because you are just a human being, family should always be aware of what you are doing and should anything happen, they will know where to start.
