{UAH} My firm designed the new Masaka Central Market and Mbarara

My firm designed the new Masaka Central Market and Mbarara Central Market (both completed) as well as Mwanjari Market, Kabale (to be built in the next phase).

It was an intensive exercise involving socio-economic research, market studies, environmental and social assessments, financial analysis, etc.

I also follow the developments (design, construction, operation) of some of these facilities as an infrastructure consultancy professional especially in this instance Wandegeya Market and Lira Central Market.

I've also worked on Shoprite - Game Lugogo, Mutaasa Kafeero Plaza (these two over twenty years ago), several arcades in downtown Kampala.

I have quite some experience in putting together project proposals, designing and actualisation of such commercial facilities both in the Public and in the Private Sector.

A lot of the time if well thought out, they can spur economic activity or act as catalysts for economic growth and serve a deeper socio-economic and socio-political purpose.

 However they are quite capital intensive and require adequate maintenance and management regimes.

One of the biggest challenges is timelines through the project cycle from inception to completion as most times there are upto ten year time lags from conception, project proposal, design to completion. For the markets number of eligible vendors had increased, and of course the vagaries of forex exchange rates, inflation, building material prices, cost of capital, etc came into play.

There is also the underlying element of Human Behaviour right from the clients/ customers/ public to the market vendors, market administration/ management, local government authorities, central government, funders, etc that greatly affect the success equation.
