MORE TANKS TO UKRAINE WILL ONLY PROLONG THE WAR.
By Abbey Kibirige Semuwemba
Germany and the USA have agreed to send Leopard IIs and Abrams tanks to Ukraine. The UK is sending tanks, too, and other nations have asked Germany to allow them to do the same.
Germany was very reluctant to send its tanks because it has been operating a non-militaristic approach since WW2. It never wants to get involved in wars anymore despite being the biggest and economically strongest country in Europe. Its interest is to not navigate into a turmoil of a third world war.
Russia, on the other hand, released a statement a few days ago. They said that the expensive tanks burn like any other tank, and they will make sure that happens. Russia has 6200 nuclear warheads in the background while Germany has none.
I think the tanks will never make it that far south. Russia has air superiority and plenty of anti-tank capability on the ground. Putin will make it a point to destroy these tanks. By the time the tanks will make it to Ukraine, Bakhmut will be lost already, 100 tanks are not a game changer, tanks with no air force are not that useful.
In addition, there's a risk of some of these tanks falling in Russian hands, which will allow Russia to effectively steal this technology. And that will have a long-term effect on the battlefield.
Anyways, this war is going to go on and on, at least for the next 7- 10 months. The chance of dialogue is becoming smaller. The Russian Army is destroying Ukrainian cities and has sent millions of Ukrainian refugees to Western countries, which reminds older Germans about how Germany looked like at the end of WW2.
From the Western perspective, allowing Russia to invade a neighbour and get what it wants, would be a horrible precedent that threatens the security of basically everybody else in the region. Sending more ammunition to Ukraine gives the Ukrainians the feeling that they will win this war, but that is a ride on the razor blade, always with the threat of an escalation into a European all-in war. More weapons create more war, and I thought the destruction of Germany's Nord Stream pipelines would cause people to wake up, but it didn't.
Tanks or no tanks, at the end of this war, Russia will still exist on the European continent as a big elephant. Ukraine will remain its neighbour; so sooner or later there must be a reconciliation amongst East European nations.
Most Russians support Putin's idea that Russia is defending the lives of 'Russians' in Donbass and that Crimea is and was always an integral part of Russia. So, Putin soldiers on!
