{UAH} Well done, Lord Mayor!
WELL DONE, LORD MAYOR!
By Abbey Kibirige Semuwemba
1. I'm glad the Lord Mayor, Erias Lukwago, has taken a vital step and denied the allegations in the letter supposedly released by Gen.Saleh a few days ago. Propaganda hurts -- it hurt FDC and Besigye, because they took it lightly.
2. The thing for Lukwago to be concerned about now is the " Barbara Streisand effect". Basically, a photographer took a series of pictures of the California coast for Google Earth. Streisand sued for invasion of privacy because her house was in one photo. The pictures went from being obscure to being famous. To top it off, no one who had seen the photos prior to the lawsuit knew her house was photographed. After the suit, her house was the most requested image.
Similarly, if Lukwago sues, he might draw more attention to this issue. But if he doesn't, he risks looking guilty in the eyes of the public. If he threatens to sue the paper, but doesn't, it buys him more time as the public finds something more interesting, like NUP's " struggle " weddings, but the issue maybe resurrected later by his enemies.
There are too many unknowns. His best bet is to go ahead and sue, if he's sure of his innocence, and I believe he's innocent.
2. Lukwago cannot sue Gen. Salim Saleh because the latter hasn't gone on record to confirm that he's the one who wrote the letters. Either way, we shall get to know the truth via the libel charges against the Newvision.
Barbra Streisand sued the California Coastal Records Project, not Google. The California Coastal Records Project was founded by Ken and Gabrielle Adelman.
By the way, her lawsuit was summarily dismissed under California's anti-SLAPP law, and she had to pay the Adelmans' legal costs.
