{UAH} TORTURE

TORTURE 

"I was arrested at about midnight on the 26th of December 1975. Around 8 civilians arrived at my house, all armed with machine guns and small arms; after searching the house...they handcuffed me together with my wife, put tape over our eyes and dark glasses over that. The whole operation was carried out without them identifying themselves at any moment, nor did they show any arrest or search warrant.

We were put into a private car, that is, one without any distinctive marks and taken to the Villa Grimaldi. They took us out of the car and immediately I was taken to the torture chamber. There they make me undress and with my hands and feet tied to the metal frame of the lower part of a bunkbed they began to apply electric current to me. This is the 'grill'. During the rest of the night they had me, applying electricity over my whole body, accompanied by blows with sticks, because of which I came out with several fractured ribs. White they applied electricity they threw water on my whole body. 

It was already dawn when I was taken off the grill and thrown, with my feet and hands chained, on the patio of the Villa. During the day on several opportunities I was again taken to 'interrogation,' where I was beaten by various men with kicks, fists and sticks...Until the 31st of December I was taken to 'interrogation' every day and every night".

"The above is an account of a torture victim in Chile during the Presidency of Augusto Pinochet. It is taken from William T. Cavanaugh's book entitled, "TORTURE AND EUCHARIST: Theology, Politics and the Body of Christ" (about which I will say more, later). Cavanaugh is an American Catholic priest and theologian. He lived and worked in Chile for three years during the Pinochet regime.
