Trump Not Responsible for Train Derailment

The Trump administration rolled back numerous regulations during its time in office, including those related to healthcare, finance, and the environment.

However, according to a recent Washington Post analysis, the administration’s regulatory changes cannot be blamed for the deadly Ohio train derailment that occurred in 2022.

Train Derailment Caused by Faulty Switch, Lack of Safety Culture

The derailment, which killed 11 people and injured over 200 others, was caused by a faulty switch that was not properly maintained. The switch had been flagged for repair several times, but the necessary repairs were never made.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) found the railroad company responsible for maintaining the switch had a “lack of safety culture” and failed to adequately train its employees.

The Ohio train derailment is just one example of how regulatory changes alone cannot ensure public safety. Regulations can provide guidelines and standards, but ultimately it is up to companies and organizations to follow them and prioritize safety.

That being said, the Trump administration’s regulatory changes have faced criticism for potentially putting public health and the environment at risk.

The administration rolled back several environmental regulations, including the Clean Power Plan and fuel economy standards for cars and trucks. Critics argue these rollbacks could contribute to increased air pollution and climate change.

In addition to environmental rollbacks, the Trump administration also made changes to healthcare regulations, including the repeal of the Affordable Care Act’s individual mandate and changes to the Medicaid program.

These changes were aimed at reducing the government’s involvement in healthcare and giving states more control over their programs. However, critics argue these changes could lead to millions of Americans losing their health insurance and facing financial hardship.

New York Times Report Disproves Buttigieg’s Claims

A recent report by the New York Times has acknowledged that claims made by Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg of the Trump administration being responsible for a train derailment in East Palestine are inaccurate.

The acknowledgment by the New York Times on Thursday was that claims made by Buttigieg on February 14, blaming former President Trump’s administration for the East Palestine train derailment due to a rail safety rule rollback, were wrong.

However, the damage had already been done, with the false claim spreading like wildfire on social media, leading to confusion and falsehoods circulating across the internet.

While Buttigieg blamed Trump for the incident, the former president himself visited East Palestine, at the time while President Biden was visiting Ukraine.

When former President Trump visited town, he delivered truckloads of bottled water to residents concerned about water quality after the toxic chemical spill from the derailment.

Buttigieg followed Trump’s visit by visiting the Ohio town the next day, while President Biden has not yet visited the affected area.
