On Thursday evening, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed the Heartbeat Protection Act into law, aligning the state with other Republican-led states.

The legislation had cleared the Florida legislature just hours before the signing. The new law offers greater protection to unborn children, granting them full rights to life once a fetal heartbeat is detected, which could occur as early as six weeks into pregnancy. It also provides funding to support mothers throughout the state.

The governor tweeted a photo of himself signing the law along with the message, “Signed the Heartbeat Protection Act, which expands pro-life protections and devotes resources to help young mothers and families.” Pro-life lawmakers and advocates were

present in the photo.

While many pro-life leaders commended the governor’s actions and fulfilled his promise to defend life in Florida, opponents of the law criticized it. They contend that, in most cases, women discover that they are pregnant beyond the six-week deadline for abortion.

Earlier on the same day, the Florida legislature passed the Heartbeat Protection Act, or SB 300, which outlines protections for unborn babies with a heartbeat beginning at six weeks gestation. The legislation also grants $25 million in funds for

pregnancy centers throughout the state, intended to support women during their pregnancy and after the child's birth.

Upon the passage of the heartbeat bill, the White House issued a statement denouncing this "extreme and dangerous" legislation, arguing that it opposed essential freedoms and went against most people's beliefs in Florida and the entire United States. The statement highlights that this ban will prevent four million Florida women of reproductive age from

accessing abortion care after six weeks, impacting the nearly 15 million women residing in other Southern states that have outlawed abortions.

"Today, Florida’s Republican supermajority-controlled legislature sent an extreme and dangerous new abortion ban to Governor DeSantis’s desk for signature.

The ban flies in the face of fundamental freedoms and is out of step with the views of the vast majority of the people of Florida and of all the United States," White House press secretary Karine-Jean Pierre stated.

The legislation includes exceptions to save the mother's life or in cases of rape or incest before 15 weeks of pregnancy. Florida enacted a 15-week abortion ban, which DeSantis signed in April 2022, and it was immediately sued. The legislation may find its way before the Supreme Court.
