Crime-Ridden San Francisco: Nordstrom, Whole Foods, And Walgreens Flee The City, Elon Musk Issues Dire Warning
Elon Musk, CEO of Twitter, has expressed his concern over the state of San Francisco's downtown area, which he described as "post-apocalyptic" due to the high level of crime that has led to businesses fleeing the area.
Musk's comments came in response to a Twitter thread discussing the closure of two Nordstrom stores in San Francisco's Westfield Mall. The mall's owner, Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield, stated that significant stores such as Nordstrom, Whole Foods, and Walgreens had left the downtown area due to "unsafe conditions" caused by a "lack of enforcement against rampant criminal activity."
Musk has been vocal about the crime issue in San Francisco, where Twitter's headquarters is located. Following the murder of tech executive Bob Lee, who was fatally stabbed in what was supposed to be a safe and upscale neighborhood, the billionaire described San Francisco's "violent crime" problem as "horrific."
While San Francisco ranks below other major U.S. cities for homicides, with about 6.9 homicides per 100,000 people, statistics show that property crimes have risen sharply since 2019. Other forms of violent crime, such as rapes and assaults, have remained relatively stable over the last four years, according to data.
However, some experts, such as Charles "Cully" Stimson of the Heritage Foundation, argue that the data reported by police does not provide a complete picture of San Francisco's crime situation, as many crimes go unreported due to the District attorney's failure to enforce the law.
"People do not report these crimes because when you have a DA who's pro-criminal and not going to enforce the law, the cops aren't going to go out and arrest somebody when they know the case is going to be no papered," Stimson told Fox News Digital last month.
Stimson criticized former San Francisco District Attorneys George Gascón and Chesa Boudin, who, between 2011 and 2022, stopped prosecuting retail thefts under $1,000. Boudin was ousted in a July 2022 recall election, while Gascón was elected District attorney of Los Angeles County.
The lack of enforcement has made customers, businesses, and employees feel unsafe in San Francisco. Before the Whole Foods store on Market Street closed its doors in April, workers reported being threatened with weapons. They made more than 560 emergency calls for incidents involving vagrants, drug use, and violence, according to the New York Times.
The National Retail Federation's 2022 retail security survey ranked San Francisco/Oakland as the second-most hard-hit metropolitan area by theft in 2020 and 2021, behind Los Angeles. New York City was third, while Houston placed fourth.
Musk warned that the philosophy that led to this bleak outcome would end civilization if extended to the world.
