Black Lives Matter's Funds Plummet By 88% - What Went Wrong?

A recent report from the Washington Free Beacon discloses that the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation saw an 88% decrease in donations for the fiscal year ending in June 2022, raising just $9.3 million.

This figure marks a significant fall from the $80 million peak following the nationwide protests spurred by the death of George Floyd in 2020.

The organization used its substantial financial resources, notably in real estate. Patrisse Cullors, the charity's founder, embarked on a nationwide real estate acquisition venture, procuring four properties in California and Georgia for an estimated $3.2 million.

In addition, the charity clandestinely purchased a $6 million luxury compound in Los Angeles using donors' contributions in October 2020. This compound served as a backdrop for Cullors to film various personal videos. The charity also extended its influence to Canada, granting $8 million to a Canadian affiliate to finance a mansion in Toronto for $6.3 million in July 2021.

Financial disclosures unveiled in May 2022 revealed that Cullors' network benefited financially. Her brother, Paul Cullors, was reimbursed $840,993 for 'professional security services,' despite having no prior professional security experience. In December 2020, he purchased a home in Los Angeles for $637,000. The charity also paid $969,459 to an art firm run by the father of Cullors' child, Damon Turner. A consulting firm owned by a charity board member, Shalomyah Bowers, a known associate of Cullors, received $2,167,894 for management services.

Black Lives Matter began to face challenges when news about Cullors' property purchases emerged in April 2021. The two activists meant to succeed her never assumed the position. The organization's financial transparency fell short, leading several states to prevent it from fundraising within their borders in early 2022. Following this, the charity voluntarily ceased its fundraising activities in February 2022.

Cullors, during an event in April 2022, expressed unease with the mandated IRS Form 990, a standard financial disclosure document required of charities. She stated, "This doesn't seem safe for us, this 990 structure—this nonprofit system structure. This is, like, deeply unsafe. This is being literally weaponized against us, against the people we work with."

Black Lives Matter's Form 990 was leveraged against it but not by the external entities Cullors claimed were out to persecute the organization. Instead, Black Lives Matter Grassroots, a former sister organization, utilized this tax return in a lawsuit filed in September 2022. The lawsuit accused Bowers of treating the charity as his "personal piggy bank," alleging he funneled an additional $10 million in "fees" to his consulting firm over the $2,167,894 already disclosed in the charity's Form 990.

The lawsuit claims that Bowers' actions have resulted in "multiple investigations by the Internal Revenue Service and various state attorney generals," inflicting irreparable damage on the charity in less than 18 months. The trial's outcome may shed further light on these internal financial dealings, demonstrating the consequences of non-transparent practices within nonprofit organizations.
