Convicted Murderer Unleashes Courtroom Attack On Own Lawyer

Joseph Zieler, convicted earlier this year for the murder and rape of 11-year-old Robin Cornell and her babysitter, 32-year-old Lisa Story, over two decades ago in Cape Coral, was caught on video elbowing his attorney in the face. The incident occurred as Zieler motioned for his lawyer, Kevin Shirley, in what appeared to be an attempt to speak with him.

Two bailiffs who wrestled Zieler to the floor swiftly halted the attack. Concerned for his attorney's well-being, the judge inquired about Shirley's condition. In response, Shirley, who has a background in boxing, assured the court, "I've taken a lot better shots than that one."

Zieler had been in court seeking a retrial before the assault took place. Shirley explained that Zieler seemed to want their conversation to remain private, away from the microphones. "So he waved me down, and I bent over, and he struck me," Shirley recounted. "The bailiffs were extremely quick to respond and eliminated any future threat."

The judge swiftly dismissed Zieler's request for a retrial. Zieler, who had already been sentenced to death twice for both murders, plans to appeal the decision, according to his attorney.  https://twitter.com/i/status/1673353293073113090

During the sentencing, the victims' loved ones shared the profound impact the 1990 murders had on their lives. Jan Cornell, Robin Cornell's mother, expressed her determination to be the voice for her daughter and Lisa Story. "I wasn't there that night to save them or at least help one get away, and for 33 years I wasn't going to let them down," she emotionally stated.

State Attorney Amira Fox, who had worked on the case for decades, described the conclusion of the trial as chilling. "To see 33 years later this justice served, I felt chills in the courtroom," Fox said. The case had stuck with her since she arrived as a young prosecutor in the area in 1990.

As Zieler's case unfolds, the courtroom attack serves as a reminder of the intense emotions and high stakes involved in capital punishment trials.
