New York Funeral Home Director Shoots Pallbearer During Burial Of 10-Year-Old Girl

A heart-wrenching incident has unfolded after an innocent child's funeral.

The owner of Compassion and Serenity Funeral Home, Wilson Chavis, 48, has been charged with first- and second-degree murder and attempted murder by the Prince George's County Police.

This unprecedented act of violence transpired at Washington National Cemetery, where a grieving family was laid to rest 10-year-old Arianna Davis, the victim of a tragic drive-by shooting on Mother's Day.

The primary victim of Chavis' alleged rage was Ronald Banks, 30, a pallbearer at the funeral. Banks had been in the employ of Freeman Funeral Services, which was reportedly in the throes of a business conflict with Chavis. A woman identified as the young girl's cousin was also wounded in the incident.

According to reports by NBC Washington, Chavis had provided services for the funeral before the violent escalation took place. At the gravesite, he confronted a pastor and another individual associated with Freeman Funeral Services. WUSA 9 cited court documents that revealed the fiery exchanges between Chavis and the pastor. The charged words included Chavis yelling, "I'm here for all you b—–a– n——!," and asserting his control over the funeral by declaring, "This ain't your f—— funeral home."

Chavis' belligerence did not end there. After tripping over a concrete vault lid, he rose, drew a firearm from his waistband, and opened fire. The local authorities apprehended the accused at a traffic stop shortly afterward.

The girl's mother, Antionette Belk, expressed her devastation to NBC Washington, saying, "I'm so traumatized that this happened at my daughter's burial site. I didn't even get to lay her down, even to put her in the ground, and another incident happened." She also revealed the harrowing detail that Chavis had spat at the pastor, shouting, "I own this body!"

Belk wasn't the only one alarmed by Chavis' actions. Glenda Freeman, the head of Freeman Funeral Services, had previously filed for a temporary peace order against Chavis due to alleged threats and harassment. Among those she sought to protect were Pastor Joseph Fletcher and another employee. However, the charge was dismissed on the funeral day due to the petitioner's absence at the morning hearing, as reported by Fox 5 DC.
