Declining Patriotism: Young Americans Turning Away From Military Service Amid Ideological Shifts And Woke Culture

Aden Gilbert, a young man who grew up immersed in military culture, has decided against following in his father's footsteps and joining the armed forces.

Gilbert, like many other young people, feels that the country and its leadership are moving away from the values he holds dear.

In an interview with Fox News, Gilbert expressed his concerns about the direction the military is taking. He questioned the purpose of having a military if the focus is on being "woke" rather than protecting the majority of American people. He asked, "Is it really worth joining and putting our life on the line for ideologies that we don't agree with and that we don't want to necessarily protect?"

Traditionally, military children have been more likely to serve their country than their peers. However, recent trends show a decline in enlistment numbers. According to a Pentagon survey from ten years ago, more than a quarter of new recruits had a parent who had served, and around 80% reported having at least one family member who had done so.

Gilbert, who is now 18 years old, explained that serving in the military was once seen as an honorable duty to protect the country and its values. However, he believes that things have changed. He said, "But I think things are a little bit different now."

The military is currently facing challenges in recruiting new members. Only the Marine Corps and Space Force expect to meet their enlistment goals this year, while the Army, Navy, and Air Force anticipate falling a combined 26,000 enlistees short in fiscal year 2023. In 2022, the Army fell short by about 15,000 soldiers, which accounted for 25% of its goal.

Military officials attribute the lackluster recruitment numbers to a competitive job market and a dwindling pool of qualified applicants. According to the Department of Defense, only 9% of young Americans are interested in serving their country.

Gilbert believes that the military is alienating potential recruits by prioritizing progressive ideologies over readiness. He cited examples such as a recent Navy recruiting pitch featuring a drag queen and a video released by the branch emphasizing the importance of pronouns. Gilbert expressed his frustration, saying, "I would rather tiptoe around literal landmines than have to tiptoe around people's pronouns."

As someone who has always considered himself a patriot, Gilbert believes that the left has eroded patriotism by promoting restrictive laws, woke ideology, and what he sees as the celebration of satanic themes in music and Hollywood. He expressed his anger towards the current President, whom he believes is leading this erosion of patriotism.

Aden's father, Jason Gilbert, who founded the Disabled Veterans PAC and helps former service members run for office, said he never pushed his children to enlist. However, he understood his son's decision, as he could see that Aden was demoralized by the direction the country was heading.

Aden Gilbert highlighted the shift in the meaning of the word "pride." He explained that while previous generations associated "pride" with the American flag, the term now brings to mind the rainbow flag. He expressed his disappointment in a commander-in-chief who seems to prioritize the rainbow flag over the American flag and who labels white supremacy and climate change as the top national security threats without denouncing Marxism.

Army Secretary Christine Wormuth acknowledged last month that the perception of the military being "woke" is contributing to recruitment challenges. She emphasized that the military is a ready Army, not a "woke" Army.

However, the top civilian leader of the Army attributed the problem to rhetoric rather than military policies. Financial incentives to join the military also hold less appeal for young people like Gilbert, as fewer students are pursuing higher education, making the GI Bill less enticing. Gilbert, for instance, started his own social media marketing business during his senior year of high school.

Gilbert concluded by stating that until the values upheld by the President align with the core values that the country's founders and past generations died for, he will stick with his decision to decline military service and focus on running his business.
