Uganda's Top Architect Henry Ssentongo Dies

He designed some of the most imposing structures on our skyline including State House Entebbe, Statistics House, Sheraton Kampala Hotel, Communications House, Workers House and Bank of Uganda

Uganda's finest architects, Henry Ssentongo, has died.

He was 86. 

The death was confirmed by Ssentongo's long-time friend, former Buganda Prime Minister, Eng J B Walusimbi

"On behalf of Rotarian Engineer JB Walusimbi with deep sorrow announce the passing on of the Late Rotarian architect Henry Ssentongo of Rotary Club of Kampala," a message from Walusimbi seen by ChimpReports reads in part. 

Circumstances of Ssentongo's death are yet to be disclosed by his family. 

Ssentongo designed some of the most imposing structures on our skyline.

These include State House Entebbe, Statistics House, Sheraton Kampala Hotel, Communications House, Workers House and Bank of Uganda. 

He has received several awards in recognition of his contribution to the development of Uganda and Africa through architecture. 

These include the King George V1 Award, Senegal's Command of the Lion and the Mandela Presidential Award. 

Ssentongo attended St Mary's College Kisubi Old Boys' Association 

He was among the few Africans who joined the former European and Asian-run Nairobi Royal Technical College (now Nairobi University) among racial discrimination. 

He underwent various challenges before proceeding to London Polytechnic, University College of London and later the University of Newcastle.
