Uganda – Landslide injuries and destruction (DG ECHO, Oxfam, URCS, media) (ECHO Daily Flash of 15 September 2023)
- A landslide occurred on 12 September in the evening affecting 5 parishes in Bungati, in the Mount Elgon sub-region of eastern Uganda close to the Kenyan border.
- Three people were injured. A total of 109 households were affected, but only 26 household were directly hit by the landslide with house partly buried or damaged, while 83 households were affected with crops destroyed.
- Other cracks on the slopes of Mount Elgon have been observed indicating that further landslides may happen. This is further exacerbated by the El Nino conditions currently affecting eastern Africa and signals that the period for landslides has tragically started.
- The DG ECHO funded Oxfam consortia for Disaster Preparedness and Response, through the Uganda Red Cross, has assessed the situation and made recommendations for locally led response.
