Desperation On The Edge: Migrant Fatalities Soar As Traffickers Force Climbing Over Treacherous 30-Foot U.S. Border Wall
In a tragic turn of events, ruthless human traffickers are compelling migrants to scale the 30-foot wall at the U.S. border, leading to hundreds of serious injuries and fatalities due to falls.
According to USA Today, nine migrants lost their lives last year after falling from the barrier separating the U.S. and Mexico. This data was reported by a single hospital in El Paso, which also treated 326 individuals for severe injuries sustained from falls of up to three stories.
This year, another medical facility in San Diego reported 345 trauma injuries from wall falls through October, including 70 in October alone, averaging more than two a day. This grim scenario is replicated across the border.
Dr. Susan McLean, Surgical ICU Director at the University Medical Center in El Paso, told USA Today, "We noticed starting right around 2020 the numbers had gone up." She further added, "It qualifies as a public health problem. It’s a preventable problem with serious consequences."
These casualties occur as thousands of migrants, at the urging of unscrupulous traffickers, continue to flock to the border. After enduring often long and arduous journeys, they are left at the Mexican side of the wall, with little choice but to attempt the climb.
The traffickers, often working swiftly to evade detection, typically throw a rope ladder over the top of the wall on the Mexican side. Migrants must pull themselves up, but with no support on the US side, they are forced to jump to the ground, resulting in most accidents.
A migrant who fractured her foot in the process told the outlet, "They don’t treat you like a queen. You have to climb."
No comprehensive records exist on the number of immigrants injured or killed while climbing the wall. Many injuries go unreported as those affected flee the scene. However, U.S. Customs and Border Protection data reveals that in 2021, 19 out of 151 migrant deaths at the border resulted from falls.
In September, following the death of a 30-year-old woman who fell from the wall, authorities reported a 162% increase in fatal falls over the past three years.
The cost of treating migrants at San Diego’s two trauma centers has surged from $11 million between 2016 and 2019 to $72 million from 2020 to June 2022, according to the New York Times.
This crisis has prompted immigration officials to encourage migrants to seek alternative routes into the U.S. "Crossing the border illegally is inherently dangerous," customs officials said in a statement. "CBP urges migrants to seek lawful pathways into the United States and not place their lives in the hands of human smugglers, whose priority is profit."
Former President Donald Trump, who commissioned the 30-foot barriers to replace an existing 18-foot version along parts of the border in 2019, once declared the wall "impassable."
Upon assuming office, President Joe Biden dismissed the wall and vowed not to construct another foot of it during his administration. However, as the border crisis has escalated, he has reversed his stance.
Earlier this year, Biden allocated $950 million to repair and fill gaps in the border wall, including commissioning a new stretch of barrier in Texas.
