Why Eric Adams’ ‘tough’ moves on migrants keep failing to stem the tides

Migrants have been getting around New York City's crackdown on buses by taking the train into the city from Secaucus, New Jersey.James Keivom

In yet another sign that refusing to face the central causes won’t end New York City’s illegal-migrant crisis, buses full of “asylum seekers” have diverted from the Port Authority to the Secaucus rail terminal, a quick train hop from the city.

So much for Mayor Adams’ orders that buses provide 36 hours’ notice, and only drop off during business hours.

Adams can pretend all he likes that Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is the central villain here; the fact is that Gotham has been deluged for two central reasons:

1) President Biden on taking office decided to wave most “asylum seekers” in, prompting an ever-increasing exodus first from Mexico and the Southern Triangle nations, then all of Latin America and the Caribbean  — and now, as Biden still refuses to bend, expanding to Africa and Asia.

Nearly three years on, the tide is only growing.

2) New York City remains committed to caring for any indigent person who requests housing, and also to providing free food, health care and more.

Adams slams the feds for not sending the city cash to help cover its migrant expenses, but won’t criticize Biden for opening the border, beyond talking about the need for a “decompression strategy” that would somehow slow the tide into Gotham.

The fundamental problem there: As long as Biden “paroles” the illegal migrants, they have every legal right to go wherever they want — and lefty advocates are eager to fight to protect those rights in court.

Indeed, advocates (and charities) have done more to help migrants get here than Abbott has.

Plus the “homeless advocates” complex is fighting tooth and nail against Adams’ efforts to (slightly) limit the “right to shelter.”

And it has an excellent chance of winning, because the mayor flinches from making the (correct) argument that the entire “right” never had any genuine legal basis.

As long as Adams won’t confront the progressives shibboleths behind the city’s migrant mess, his “boldest” moves will keep on failing.
