Democrats and Independents felt energized about economy this month as Republicans soured, survey shows

President Joe Biden's exit from the 2024 presidential election – and Vice President Kamala Harris' subsequent rise as the Democratic Party's nominee – perked up some Americans feelings about the economy this month, but some others became more pessimistic.

The University of Michigan's latest consumer survey, released Friday, showed that "sentiment for Democrats climbed 6% in the wake of Harris replacing Biden as the Democratic nominee for president." Sentiment among people surveyed who identified as "independent" also improved, rising 3%.

But consumer sentiment among respondents who identified as Republican "moved in the opposite direction, falling 5% this month," the survey said.

The poll also found that more respondents feel more confident about how Harris would handle the economy versus her opponent, former President Donald Trump.

"The survey shows that 41% of consumers believe that Harris is the better candidate for the economy, while 38% chose Trump," Joanne Hsu, the survey's director, said in a release.
